Skin Cancer Removal

A diagnosis of skin cancer can be very difficult. Additionally, knowing that the removal of skin cancer can also potentially be disfiguring or cause scarring is upsetting. As an expert in treating facial skin cancers, Dr. Minton will review your diagnosis and help determine the proper treatment to remove the cancer with the least amount of scarring possible.

Ideal Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for skin cancer removal if you have been diagnosed with skin cancer that can be treated by surgically removing it. While scaring is a result of any surgery, a skilled plastic surgeon is trained to remove the cancerous cells while minimizing scarring.

As with all medical procedures, excellent candidates are those in good overall health and who have informed, realistic expectations. We serve clients from Savannah, Hilton Head and surrounding areas.

The Skin Cancer Removal Procedure

The technique for skin cancer removal is highly individualized based on the size, type and location of the lesion. In general, Dr. Minton with administer local or general anesthesia so you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure. Then he uses a surgical instrument to excise the cancerous cells. In some cases, only a small portion of the cancerous cells sit on the surface, while more lie further beneath the skin, requiring more tissue to be removed in order to get all of the cancerous cells. After the cancerous cells have been removed, Dr. Minton begins reconstruction, repositioning healthy tissue over the wound. In some cases, a skin graft or a flap is needed to cover the affected area. After the surgery, bandages are applied to the wound.

As part of your consultation, Dr. Minton will discuss the healing process with you. He will give instructions on the best ways to take care for the treated area and will prescribe medications to aid healing, reduce the chance of infection, and manage any discomfort. Follow-up appointments will be arranged to ensure that your healing is going well.
