Jumpstart collagen production with microneedling

a collagen induction therapy that reduces the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, stretch marks, and more

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive procedure focused on skin rejuvenation that improves the firmness and texture of skin cells while reducing the appearance of wrinkling and acne scarring. The process involves a microneedling device tipped with a cluster of fine needles, that is passed over the face, creating hundreds of imperceptible micro-injuries in the top layer of the skin. This triggers the body to naturally increase collagen production and elastin for a fresher, more youthful appearance. Microneedling may also be combined with topical treatments or other vitamin-rich serums. Microneedling is effective in treating a wide variety of skin conditions and issues, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scars
  • Chickenpox scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose skin
  • Skin damaged by sun
  • Enlarged pores
  • Skin conditions such as Hyperpigmentation

Ideal Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you have any of the issues listed above and are interested in treating these skin irregularities with an effective non-surgical treatment.

Microneedling can be performed anywhere on the face, scalp, neck, and body, and can treat all types of skin. As with all medical procedures, excellent candidates are those in good overall health and who have informed, realistic expectations. We serve clients from Savannah, Hilton Head and surrounding areas.

Preparing For Microneedling

An initial consultation with Dr. Minton is the first step to any procedure. There he will discuss your health history, skin type, and answer any questions you may have regarding the benefits of Microneedling. Medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can prevent blood clotting.

The Microneedling Procedure

To prepare their skin for Microneedling Savannah patients skin will be thoroughly washed and a topical anesthetic may be applied to the treatment area to alleviate any discomfort. Then Dr. Minton will use a pen-like, microneedling device, tipped with hundreds of tiny needles (dermaroller) to create small punctures on the top layer of skin. (The microneedling pen can be adjusted for speed and depth of penetration, depending on the area being treated.)

Microneedling Treatment Recovery

After receiving our Savannah Microneedling treatment, Dr. Minton will apply a vitamin-rich serum to be absorbed into the skin. You will experience redness and swelling similar to a sunburn that will last 24 to 48 hours, and there may be minimal pinpoint bruising. However, microneedling has very few side effects otherwise. Within a week of the microneedling sessions, your skin will appear smoother and more radiant, but the results will continue to improve over the course of a few months. Dr. Minton will recommend the correct, protective skincare products to use after the procedure, such as cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, and exfoliating products.

Frequently Asked Questions

By creating micro-injuries on the skin’s surface with tiny needles, skin needling stimulates the body to produce new collagen and elastin. This creates a more plump and rejuvenated appearance as the skin undergoes resurfacing. It also leaves behind smoother skin with more even coloring.

Microneedling is a very safe, minimally invasive treatment that requires no downtime.

The treatment itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the treated area.

Though the microneedling pen causes minimal discomfort, Dr. Minton may apply a topical anesthetic to make the procedure entirely pain-free.

Like surgery, the effects of microneedling are permanent, though it is less likely to provide the dramatic results surgery can. However, microneedling can be used as a way to “preview” the results of more permanent procedures such as a facelift, scar revision, or even a chemical peel.
