Go Big or Go Home?

Cosmetic goals are personal, so when it comes to dermal fillers and injectables, how much or how little is up to you. Here’s how to make sure you get what you want.

By Andrea Goto

We all have our individual tastes. I like grilled chicken, but my husband wants it fried. I prefer “Judge Judy” while my friends can’t miss an episode “The Bachelor” (I can’t even). I won’t wear high-waisted jeans, but, yes, they look good on you. The same goes for the look we prefer when it comes to dermal fillers or injectables like Botox. And the good news is that the key to getting what you want is mostly up to you.

Find a legit practice

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of regulation when it comes to injectables like Botox, which is why you may find offers from a dentist, pop-up clinics or an at-home injection party. But it’s best to stick to the pros, especially when it comes to your moneymaker.

While needles are less invasive than surgical incisions, it’s still more than just “point-and-poke.” You want someone who understands the facial anatomy and has access to the right products to get the best results. So be safe and seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon’s office.

Choose your provider

Once you find a practice that is legit, check out their website and social media and see the before-and-after pics from their various providers’ clients. Look for patients of similar age who have similar issues. Do you like the results the injector gave?

Every injector has their own artistic eye and if you find a look you like, then choose to take the leap with them.

Communicate your goals

Once you’ve chosen your provider, it’s so important to communicate your goals. Provide examples of the looks that you like, keeping in mind that not every person is the same, nor can they achieve the same results.

A good provider will always be honest (yes, even if it’s not what you want to hear) and should help manage your expectations. You shouldn’t feel as if you’re being sold the farm.

Start small

At first, less is more. If after two weeks the results aren’t quite what you want, a good practitioner can tweak the procedure. Keep in mind that Botox and other injectables can’t be reversed, but dermal fillers can be dissolved if you aren’t satisfied with the results. Once you know the treatment that works for you, your practitioner will keep the information on file for the future.

Pay the price, or you may pay the price

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. A deep price cut from an office you’ve never visited, or the discount promise of an out-of-town or travelling medspa most likely won’t deliver the safe and effective treatment you’re seeking. And, you will likely be putting yourself at risk. Effective treatments and quality products cost money. When it comes to cosmetic procedures, you get what you pay for.
