Hair, Hair, Everywhere

Tired of tedious landscaping? Laser hair removal might just be the answer.

A few months ago, my 12-year-old daughter emerged from the bathroom announcing that she had shaved her legs for the first time.

“No!” I exclaimed. “Why would you do that?!”

I wasn’t upset that my daughter was growing up too fast or that she raked a razor across her baby skin without my supervision (well, maybe a little). I was upset because she had set in motion a shaving cycle that would annoy her for the rest of her life.

“It was fun,” she assured me.

“Just wait 40 years and then tell me how fun it is.”

Apparently, it was so much fun that my daughter considered shaving other parts of her body as well. Not her head (yet), thank goodness. But I can’t say the same for her arms. A week later, I attempted to snuggle her little cactus body and emerged with a rash.

“Who shaves their arms?!” I ask my friend.

“I do,” she replied.

Turns out, there are a lot of body-hair haters out there, armed with either a pack Daisy razors and cans of Skintimate shave cream, or a stash of money so that they can have wax poured over their body’s bits and then violently ripped off.

I honestly don’t see a person’s arm hair, unless it’s long enough to curl or entrap an insect, but I do insist on shaving my legs except for that one summer in college where I was so tired of the process I decided to let shaving go and let the hair grow. That is, until it got to the point that when I rode my bike, I actually felt the wind blowing through my leg hair. #TimesUp

Unless you’re 12, shaving sucks. It’s a chore and even more so for those of us with really long legs. And for those of us who’ve been doing it for decades, we wonder if maybe it’s time to stop. I’m not suggesting going full Wookie. (The only hair that should blow is that on our heads.) I’m suggesting real, permanent hair removal.

When I compare old-school shaving and waxing to laser hair removal—which isn’t cheap and comes with some discomfort—I think laser hair removal might just be winning. Waxing (I’m told) is painful, and you have to keep making and going to appointments. (I loathe commitment.) As for shaving, I will have spent a small fortune on razors and creams by the time I reach the age where I see my body hair as a way to keep my body warm in the winter. That’s also the age where I’ll be really ticked about how much time I wasted shaving—which I will blame for never writing my great American novel.

If tending to your hair removal habits is getting in the way of achieving your dreams, laser hair removal might be the answer. Wanting my daughter to achieve big things, I think I’ll start a laser-hair removal fund now. By the time she hits 20, she’ll want it.
