The Wedding Makeover

By Andrea Goto

This month, my husband and I will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary. (Yes, at 22, I was a child bride.) But when I look back on the wedding landscape of the past two decades, not much has really changed. There are still flowers, music, gowns, invites, pre-wedding primping, etc. However, when I take a closer look, I can see that weddings really have evolved when it comes to the finer details.

Documentary photos have replaced stiff portraits. Natural hair has replaced stiff hair. Rouge has been ousted by blush. There’s less Party City décor and more DIY, and the “Electric Slide” is (hopefully) a thing of the past. And when it comes to pre-wedding primping, things have gotten hi-tech.

Back when I was young, a wedding makeover consisted of brides enjoying a massage, facial and mani-pedi. We looked tidy and fresh-faced walking down the aisle. Today, brides and grooms can do even more look their absolute best when all eyes are on them (and, lest you forget, you will be recorded for all of history). Some are even working a wedding makeover into the budget.

What does a wedding makeover consist of? It’s entirely up to you. Some people may use the wedding as the catalyst to address an issue that’s bothered them for a long time, opting for a surgical procedure such as a rhinoplasty (nose job) or blepharoplasty (eye lift). Others may go the less invasive route with chemical peels, laser resurfacing, Botox and fillers. Some may be all-in for both.

The key is identifying your goals and creating a realistic timeline in which to have them met. That’s where your cosmetic surgeon comes in. The last thing anyone wants is to cruise down the aisle with visible bruising or irritation. I mean, in the past, a mere pimple has sent many a bride spiraling (which, by the way, can also be treated!). You want to be healed and, better yet, have the desired results fully realized.

So if your wedding is on the books and you’re curious about cosmetic surgeries or procedures that might be right for you and your budget, like all-things wedding, it’s best to consult a professional and plan early.
